Single Lovely, from beautiful Melbourne indie group, Tinpan Orange, brought a honest smile to my face. I was engaged lyrically and musically the whole three minutes. I give credit to obvious influences such as Australian beauties Clare Bowditch, Sarah Blasko or Jessica Chapnik, bringing warmth to vocal tones, accentual flairs, and accentuating plosives. The minor key hooks are exactly that – lovely! They have had plenty of support from well-known Australian rocker John Butler and so they should.

There is a tiny tiny piano solo towards the closing of the bridge which really makes this track different to the generic indie junk flying around these days. Instrumentally, this track is so exciting. Intricate piano keys coupled with marching heart beat riffs make this track. Lyrically, the track is striking- full of personified phrasing, and delicate one liners. The second track on this record Romeo Don’t Come, does lend itself towards a country love song, with its electric rocking-chair guitar, and reflective lyrics.

However, I was pleasantly surprised as underneath emerged string instrument sounds, offering a symphony quality, to an otherwise simple song. Perfectly slotted in before the second/third verse, is a gentle guitar and string solo, following a waltzing rhythm – totally suiting the overall emotion of the track. Their up and coming record, The Bottom of the Lake, produced by Harry Angus(Jackson Jackson, The Cat Empire) will be a cracker.

Don’t be quick to judge; they most definitely surpassed my expectations.
