Welcome to Violet

Melanie Oxley and Chris Abrahams
Welcome to Violet

A deceptively simple album Jerusalem Bay finds the duo in a more acoustic mode than their previous releases. It presents a collection of songs written over the past two years which, with the addition of acoustic bass, drums and trumpet are delivered in sparse arrangements of jazz quintets and piano/vocal duets. With Jerusalem Bay, Oxley and Abrahams achieve an intimate, oneiric mood, a further maturation from their previous work.

The poetic nature of Oxley/Abrahams' compositions is to the fore in this uncomplicated, beautifully recorded set (mixed by Jeremy Allom - mixing engineer for Massive Attack's Blue Lines). From the Marguerite Duras-inspired Time of First Departures, to the wild cocktail bossa nova of Wiseblood, through the torch-songesque Safe Journey On, Oxley and Abrahams are at dark play in the somnambulistic melancholic, as if Anne Sexton had tried her hand at writing pop songs with Burt Bacharach.
