Quiet Music For Quiet People

Inga Liljestrom
Quiet Music For Quiet People

Available June 2nd 2014

After two years away and five based in France, Australian singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist & film composer, Inga Liljestrom returns home, following up 2011’s Black Crow Jane album, with 4th solo studio LP , Two Dangers

Revisiting her rustic roots & inspired by the folk of her youth, Inga is joined by resophonic guitars & banjos, spooky saws, viscid leatherwood violins & dusty clapboard rhythms.

Showcasing the new songs up & down Australia’s East Coast, Inga’s visit culminates in a Sydney album launch at Venue 505 on May 23. This Australian version of Two Dangers features extra tunes not contained on the European pressing, including a beautiful cover of Cat Stevens’ Trouble.

The story so far… After a year topping the independent Australian dance charts, Sydney-sider Inga Liljeström had amassed a swag of shimmering reviews, an amazingly loyal fan base & comparisons to everyone from Bjork to Marianne Faithful for her second solo album ELK (2005). Radio, press, live reviewers and punters alike, gushed over Inga’s lush string arrangements, dense cinematic productions, spellbinding lyrics & magical performances. Elk’s first two singles Phoenix & All Of This were added on many stations including Triple J (for whom she recorded a Live At The Wireless set), while Sydney’s Nova decided the whole album deserved it’s Chillzone Feature Album spot. Numerous Album Of The Week accolades & descriptions like “one of the most exciting albums of the year” jostled for prominence in an ever-growing index of praise.

From the Sydney Morning Herald’s glowing review (“mesmerising… raises gooseflesh”) to 3D World’s exclamation, “What A Triumph!”, by year’s end Catalogue had decided “Bjork [could] take her latest album Medulla and shove it – Elk’s cinematic swoon is so sensual”. What followed were a string of sell-out shows, including a headlining Sydney Opera House performance and numerous festival appearances (Cockatoo Island Festival, Adelaide Festival, Sydney Festival, New Caledonia’s Femme Funk Festival, Poland’s Wroclaw Impart alongside Amanda Palmer and Colours of Ostrava in the Czech Republic with Goldfrapp and Sinead Oconnor).

Invitations then came for collaborations with UK dance group Kosheen, Grammy-nominated producer Carmen Rizzo (Seal, kd lang, Amp Fidler, Oakenfold) Nouvelle Vague, The Church, Gotye (including a remix for his ARIA-winning Mixed Blood CD), Hi-Fi Mike & many other songwriters, producers & filmmakers.

In the years following, came Inga’s DVD collection ‘Radjur’, two CD collections of remixes/collaborations, plus group improv LP, Quiet Music For Quiet People.

Inga then decamped to France, studied Yoik music, assembled a new band, gave birth to a little girl & wrote/recorded Black Crow Jane – her most primordial set to date (unless you count her earlier agro-duo Helgrind). Shifting from spirited rock vamps to bloodied ballads, Black Crow Jane earned comparisons to PJ Harvey, Nick Cave and Kate Bush in Europe, where France’s largest public broadcaster, France Inter playlisted the single Bittersweet for the whole of the European summer.

Besides earlier soundtrack work, Inga’s distinctive vocals feature on recent Australian TV shows Blood Brothers & Rake, whilst work with Branch Nebula found her touring the edgy, kinetic dance theatre production Paradise City throughout Australia & South America. Filmic collaborations with ARIA-winning composer Michael Lira continue, earning the pair new awards earlier this year. That brings us up-to-date, but ignores chart-topping outings with  Gerling, d.i.g, Itch-e & Scratch-E...
