TEN YEARS AGO TERRY SERIO WAS NEARLY DEAD.
Incapable of performance as an actor or musician, his life was dominated by narcotic, alcohol and prescription medicine abuse. As a survivor he is one of a rare species. After a number of years in rehabilitation he emerged and began to live his life with his self-destructive impulses under control and a fierce creativity at hand. He is now one of Australia’s most accomplished and versatile performers, winning a Helpmann Award for his performance in KEATING! THE MUSICAL in 2007.
The seed that became Terry’s band, THE MINISTRY OF TRUTH, was sewn when Terry played a series of songs to Jon Schofield (PAUL KELLY AND THE COLOURED GIRLS/MESSENGERS) who picked up a bass guitar and played along. The current sound and lineup was established in 2010 with: Jon Schofield on guitar, mandolin and accordion; Jason Burec rock steady on drums; the Kaldor Brothers, John (pedal steel) and Peter (bass); and with violinist/piano accordionist Kathryn Brownhill (SOMETHING FOR KATE, THE WHITLAMS, THE GADFLYS) comes the most recent touch of textural colour.
Performances in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and festivals; solo, small combos have lead to the Studio Ripple 6 track mini-album WHO’S TO CRY produced by Chris Rollans (LANIE LANE’S TO THE HORSES).
WHO’S TO CRY features six gorgeous and gritty Australian urban roots songs of love, loss, disillusion, addiction, brushes with the law, divine providence and redemption... tall tales and true that draw their musical and lyrical inspiration from the deep well of authentic roots country styles and themes with discernible influences from the likes of Hank Williams to Warren Zevon.
“We recorded with Chris @ Studio Ripple as close to a live situation as possible with minimal overdubs and close physical proximity. We found our best live performances are when we are really listening to each other so wanted to try that in the studio. It worked beautifully I’m pleased to say. Weaving mandolin, pedal steel and violin into the mix was the sonic icing” says Terry.
The six track EP WHO’S TO CRY was launched at Sydney’s Camelot Lounge on 16 August 2012, and is now proudly distributed by VITAMIN Records.
