Heidi Elva’s new single - ‘The Saviour’ was recorded late at night in an abandoned room in an old house in Pascoe Vale, Melbourne.
The moon was low and waxing.
Heidi played the harp, the drum beat and sang. Jona Byron (Sound Zoo, The Boats) recorded and produced it, played the bass and guitar and carefully worked on each layer.
The Saviour’ is a trip hop tune drawing on Heidi’s musical influences from Massive Attack to Juana Molina to the days spent listening to Dub while growing up in New Zealand.
It’s a dimly lit scene. The iphone effects are alien like. The bass line and beat, magnetic. Heidi’s voice, tempting.
This is Heidi’s first release since her debut album ‘Ships and Trees’ came out in late 2008.
After ‘Ships and Trees’, Heidi moved to Melbourne from Sydney and has been doing some musing about life.
‘The Saviour’ was written while Heidi was thinking a lot about one part of the human condition. That desire to meet “The One”. This idea that there is someone out there for all of us, someone who will complete us and save us from our fear of being alone.
Heidi realised it is far more important to save yourself first.
Note to listener – make sure you have good bass speakers to fully appreciate this song.
